The Soroti District LC5 Chairperson Hon. Bob Owiny (B.O.B) has made history by hosting the Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, His Grace the Most Rev. Dr. Stephen Samuel Kazimba Mugalu, at the district headquarters in what was described as the first official visit by an Archbishop to the local government offices.
The visit on Monday, October 19, 2026, marked the conclusion of Archbishop Kazimba’s three-day farewell tour of the Diocese of Soroti as he prepares for retirement next year.
Owiny welcomed the Archbishop alongside district and city leaders in a demonstration of cooperation between the Church and local government. The Archbishop received gifts from the district leadership, Halcyon High School and its proprietor, former State Minister for Fisheries Hon. Hellen Adoa Abeku.
“I thank His Grace for the lifetime opportunity of hosting him at the district headquarters. I am grateful to Bishop Kosea Odongo for making this historic visit possible. I also thank all our leaders for their support and for turning up to welcome His Grace,” Owiny said.
Archbishop Kazimba thanked B.O.B for his visionary and organised leadership, as well as for bringing district and city leaders together to welcome him and strengthen cooperation between the Church and local government.
Archbishop Prays for District and City Leaders
During the visit, Archbishop Kazimba paid a courtesy call to the District Chairperson’s office before praying for and blessing the political and technical leaders of Soroti District and Soroti City.
Those in attendance included the Resident District Commissioner (RDC), Resident City Commissioner (RCC), Soroti City Mayor, district and city council speakers, councillors, the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), City Clerk and other civil servants.
Owiny described the occasion as a significant milestone for the district, thanking the Archbishop for the honour and commending the Bishop of Soroti Diocese, Rt. Rev. Kosea Odongo, for facilitating the visit.
Farewell Tour Features Church Projects
The Archbishop’s three-day visit began on Saturday, October 17, when he was received at Awoja Bridge in Aukot Sub-county, Gweri County, Soroti District. His arrival was followed by radio talk shows on Etop Radio and Voice of Teso.
On Sunday, October 18, Archbishop Kazimba consecrated St. Peter’s Cathedral and commissioned the new Bishop’s House, Church of Uganda Guest House and Sunday school block. The programme also featured a nursery bed initiative.
On Monday, he visited Soroti District headquarters before proceeding to the Kingdom Savings Group and later to Bishop Odongo’s ancestral home in Apewulai, Ogolai, Amuria District, for a thanksgiving function.
The Archbishop was seen off at Awoja by Bishop Odongo, Hon. Owiny and the wider delegation.
As Archbishop Kazimba prepares to retire next year, his farewell visit provided an opportunity to engage with the faithful, commission church facilities and bless leaders across the district and city.
Archbishop Kazimba commended B.O.B for his visionary and organised leadership, noting that the warm reception and coordinated participation of district and city leaders reflected a strong spirit of service and cooperation.
B.O.B Highlights Church-State Cooperation
Owiny’s hosting of the Archbishop highlighted the importance of cooperation between religious institutions and local government in promoting unity, spiritual guidance and community development.
For Soroti District, the Archbishop’s visit to the headquarters will remain a memorable occasion, bringing together political and technical leaders to welcome the head of the Church of Uganda.
