Ugandan legislators Hon. Evelyne Ninsiima and Hon. Achayo Juliet Lodou have secured key positions on international parliamentary committees following their election at the 153rd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in Arusha, Tanzania.

The two MPs were elected to serve four-year terms on committees dealing with terrorism, violent extremism, peace and international security, strengthening Uganda’s representation in global parliamentary discussions.

Hon. Ninsiima, the Rubanda District Woman Representative, was elected to the IPU High-Level Advisory Group on Countering Terrorism and Violent Extremism.

Her appointment places her on a body focused on parliamentary engagement in addressing terrorism and violent extremism, issues that continue to feature prominently in international security discussions.

Meanwhile, Hon. Achayo Juliet Lodou, Member of Parliament for Ngora County, was elected to the IPU Committee on Peace and International Security for a four-year term.

Reacting to her election, Achayo said the appointment offered an opportunity to contribute to international discussions on peace and security while representing Uganda’s interests on the global parliamentary stage.

“I welcome this opportunity to serve on the Committee on Peace and International Security. I look forward to contributing to discussions and initiatives that promote peace, strengthen international cooperation and address the challenges affecting communities across the world,” Achayo said.

The committee provides a platform for parliamentarians to engage on international peace, security and cooperation among nations.

The Ugandan delegation at the Assembly was led by Speaker Jacob Marksons Oboth, who joined parliamentary leaders from across the world for discussions on shared global challenges and strengthening international parliamentary cooperation.

The Assembly also elected Hon. Milton Dick, Speaker of Australia’s House of Representatives, as the new IPU President.

He succeeds Tanzania’s Speaker, Hon. Tulia Ackson, who served a three-year term.

The election of Ninsiima and Achayo to the respective committees gives the two legislators a platform to participate in international parliamentary deliberations on security and peace during their four-year tenures.

The 153rd IPU Assembly in Arusha brought together parliamentarians from different countries to deliberate on global concerns and explore ways of strengthening cooperation through parliamentary diplomacy.
