Residents of Ngariam County in Katakwi District have a reason to smile after a comprehensive water source rehabilitation drive initiated by their Member of Parliament, Hon Peter Ogwang, who is also the Minister of State for Education and Sports in charge of Sports.

The intervention, being executed through his Personal Assistant Micheal Malinga, is targeting broken down and non-functional boreholes across the constituency, a move aimed at restoring access to safe and clean water for rural communities.

According to Malinga, the Minister is deeply concerned about the deteriorating state of community water sources in Ngariam and the need to ensure effective monitoring of government programs intended to serve the local population. He said access to clean water remains a top priority on the Minister’s development agenda for the county.

For the month of October 2026, several water sources have already been fully repaired and handed back to the communities for use.

The rehabilitated sources include Cheeli village borehole in Getom Sub County, Lale Primary School and Otomei village boreholes in Akoboi Sub County, and Keelim village borehole in Katakwi Sub County.

Community members in the beneficiary villages have welcomed the intervention, noting that they had endured months of water scarcity and long distances in search of clean water following the breakdown of their boreholes.

Malinga said the rehabilitation exercise is not a one-off activity but a continuous program that will cover the entire Ngariam County to ensure that no village is left struggling with broken water sources.

He added that the Minister is committed to working with district water department and community water source committees to ensure sustainability and proper maintenance of the repaired boreholes.

The ongoing water project complements other community-based interventions supported by the legislator in the areas of health, education and livelihood improvement across Ngariam County in Eastern Uganda.
