KAMPALA — Soroti District has joined local governments from across Uganda in pushing for practical solutions to challenges affecting agricultural production and service delivery.
The district was represented at a two-day national engagement on strategies to transform Uganda’s agricultural sector, held at Imperial Royale Hotel in Kampala and organised by the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Fisheries (MAAIF).
The Soroti District LC5 Chairperson Hon. Bob Owiny, popularly known as B.O.B, led the district leadership at the engagement alongside RDC Hajj Imran Muluga and Chief Administrative Officer Mr. Ssempala Emmanuel.
The meeting brought together political leaders, administrators and technical officers from districts across the country to examine how local governments can play a stronger role in agricultural transformation.
Irrigation and livestock health dominate discussions
Among the major issues on the agenda was the push for irrigation across all districts, as government seeks to increase agricultural production and reduce dependence on rainfall.
Participants also discussed Foot and Mouth Disease vaccination, development of fish farming, and the need to strengthen agricultural extension services.
A major concern raised was the recruitment and remuneration of extension workers, with participants examining the need for proper structures of service to ensure farmers receive timely and effective technical support.
The engagement featured presentations from MAAIF State Ministers, including Hon. Lt. Col. (Rtd) Bright Rwamirama, Minister of State for Animal Husbandry, and Hon. Robert Migade, Minister of State for Fisheries.
Soroti leadership joins sub-regional discussions
Representatives were divided into sub-regional groups to assess agricultural challenges and opportunities affecting their respective areas and develop recommendations for consideration.
The wider engagement brought together LC5 Chairpersons, RDCs/RCCs, Chief Administrative Officers, District Production Officers, District Veterinary Officers and District Agricultural Engineers from across Uganda.
The meeting was officially opened by Hon. Frank Tumwebaze, Minister of Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Fisheries, on behalf of the Prime Minister, and later closed by Hon. (Rtd) Gen. Kahinda Otafiire, Minister for Water and Environment.
For Soroti, the engagement provided a platform for the district leadership to participate in national discussions on interventions expected to influence agricultural production, livestock management, fisheries and extension services at the local government level.
